Wendelstein

Brannenburg to Bayrischzell via Wendelsteinhaus

The Wendelstein (1838m) is one of the most famous mountains in the Bavarian Pre-Alps.
Due to its exposed position and the sun terrace on the summit, it enjoys this fame mostly, but at the expense of mass tourism.

Thanks to the gondola and cogwheel railway, everyone can enjoy the summit. Nevertheless, it is worth a climb at any time of year. A quick and easy option is the ascent of the Wendelstein from Sudelfeld, which is also highly recommended for its scenery.

Overview

You can already see the striking Wendelstein from Munich. A trip to the 1,838 m high Wendelstein is a real “must” not only for mountain lovers around Munich. There is an amazing amount to discover and experience around the mountain station: Hiking, lookout pulpit, GEO Park, observatory, Wendelstein cave….

The striking lookout mountain is accessible from two sides, from Brannenburg in the Inn valley by rack railway and from Bayrischzell in the Leitzach valley by cable car. About 100 metres below the summit are the Wendelsteinkircherl, the Wendelsteinhöhle and the Wendelsteinhaus. From the joint mountain station of the cable car and cogwheel railway, a well-maintained path leads to the summit. There, a viewing platform offers a fantastic view to the south, west and north. The view to the east is restricted by an LMU observatory and BR broadcasting facilities.
