Wank

Wank (1780 m) is one of the most visited mountains in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

Thanks to the cable car which runs from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the top. It’s often very crowded because of many tourists going up on the cable car. The hike is easy in general. In winter you definitely need gaiters and spikes.

Overview

The Wank (1780m) near Garmisch is widely known. Due to its exposed position, it offers a sensational view of the Wetterstein Mountains, especially Zugspitze and Alpspitze to the south. To the north, in the immediate vicinity, Krottenkopf, Hohe Kisten, to the west the bold Daniel and somewhat closer the Kramerspitz and to the west the entire Karwendel, even the Sonnjoch can be glimpsed. Directly below lies the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

This great location attracts a correspondingly large number of curious mountain walkers thanks to the mountain railway and two cosy summit houses (Sonnenalm and Wankhaus) and numerous benches. Especially when the cable car is at a standstill, the Wank is a real tip for a panoramic mountain, which can be easily climbed by quite simple paths – in winter and in summer! We describe a beautiful circular route with a descent via the Esterbergalm, which is open for service, and from there on a wide forest path back to the car park.

Ascent: The hike starts from Farchant and after following a forest road, you will quickly arrive on a path which goes through forest. The views of Farchant is amazing. Soon the trail merges into a forest road. Soon you will arrive at a sign post to wank. The trail goes through forest and is steep. But the views of Estergbirge and Soierngruppe is breathtaking. After walking about 1 hour, you will arrive at wank.

Descent: For the descent follow the same trail as ascent for 10 min and then walk up to Eckenberg, and follow the trail from there to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The trail is going through forest and some parts are steep and also slippery in winter. However, the trail has the best views of Wetterstein mountains, including Zugspitze, Alpspitze, Waxenstein etc. It takes around 2.5 hours from Wank to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
