Daniel
from Lermoos

Daniel(2338m), the highest peak of the Ammergau Alps.

Starting from the picturesque village of Lermoos, this route offers a mix of peaceful forest trails and breathtaking summit views.

The route begins gently from the edge of Lermoos and spirals through the forest forest, gradually gaining elevation. As we ascend, the trees give way to open terrain with views over the Loisachtal valley and surrounding peaks. With each step, the imposing limestone summit of Daniel comes closer into view.

The final section is steeper and more demanding, requiring surefootedness and a head for heights, but the reward at the top is spectacular: a 360-degree panorama stretching from the Zugspitze to the Allgäu Alps and deep into Bavaria.

Overview

Daniel – The Highest Peak of the Ammergau Alps

Rising proudly above the Tyrolean Zugspitz Arena, Daniel (2,340 m) is the tallest mountain in the Ammergau Alps and offers one of the most scenic summit hikes in the region. Starting from the charming alpine village of Lermoos, the route to the top combines peaceful forest paths, open alpine terrain, and sweeping views that grow more dramatic with every meter gained in elevation.

The hike begins gently at the edge of Lermoos, where a well-marked trail leads into a quiet, shaded forest. The path winds steadily uphill, occasionally opening up to glimpses of the valley below. Birdsong and the rustle of leaves accompany us as we make our way higher, moving through an ever-changing landscape shaped by both nature and time.

As we leave the dense forest behind, the trail emerges into more rugged, open terrain. From here, wide views unfold across the Loisachtal valley, and the surrounding peaks of the Lechtal Alps and Zugspitze massif come into view. The majestic limestone summit of Daniel, once distant, now rises clearly ahead—its sharp outline silhouetted against the sky.

The final ascent demands more focus: the path becomes steeper, narrower, and more exposed. Surefootedness and a good level of fitness are essential, and those with a head for heights will relish the challenge. Yet the effort is more than worth it—reaching the summit rewards hikers with a truly unforgettable panorama. From the top, you can take in a full 360-degree view, stretching from the jagged peaks of the Zugspitze to the rolling hills of Bavaria, and all the way across the Allgäu Alps to the horizon.

On the descent, we have the option to return the same way or continue via the Tuftlalm, a welcoming alpine hut set in a meadow with fantastic views—perfect for a well-earned pause and a hearty Tyrolean snack.

Whether you’re chasing solitude, adventure, or simply stunning views, the hike to Daniel is a rewarding journey to the top of the Ammergau Alps.
